Can I remove a W from my transcript if I retake the class and receive a letter grade?

I messed up right after high school and have some F's and W's on my college transcript. Ten years later, they're the reason I have such a low gpa and causing some problems for me now. Can I get those removed by retaking the class and getting a better grade? If so, will it be completely removed from my transcript (as if I've never taken it before)or will it still show my bad grades? Can I remove a W from my transcript if I retake the class and receive a letter grade?
It depends on the policy of the college, but the most common policy is to leave Fs and Ws on your transcript and just show that you re-took the course. Usually, retaking a course will erase the negitive effects on your GPA, but the transcript will still show that F.Can I remove a W from my transcript if I retake the class and receive a letter grade?
No, grades are NEVER removed no matter what you do, it will always remain on your transcript. That's what makes a transcript have value as it shows everything you've done.
